Take turns going beyond small talk
Let the conversation deepen gradually and keep it reciprocal. This was a test of short-term closeness, not a formula for creating a lasting relationship.
Take turns sharing something genuine and asking a similarly personal question.
A 36-question, 45-minute reciprocal task produced more closeness than equally long small talk.
Why consider it?
The experiment paired unfamiliar university students for gradually deeper questions. The numbers describe the task, not a quantified effect size. Short-term closeness was greater than in the small-talk comparison; long-term relationships were not tested, and the result cannot be predicted for every conversation.
