Hear thunder? Change the plan
A tent, isolated tree or open shelter is not the protection described here. Interrupt the outing rather than waiting for rain to start.
Take shelter in a building or hard-topped vehicle when you hear thunder.
The US National Weather Service advises waiting 30 minutes after the last thunder before resuming activity.
Why consider it?
The waiting time is an official safety rule, not a quantified reduction in lightning injuries. The guidance distinguishes buildings and hard-topped vehicles from exposed outdoor locations. No outdoor location is described as safe during a nearby thunderstorm; the advice does not remove every risk in a particular shelter.
