Price the repair before buying the warranty

Do the break-even calculation before the checkout pitch. A device you depend on without a backup may need a different decision.

AN ACTION TO CONSIDER

Compare an extended warranty's price with a repair you could afford and the cover you already have.

Historical US retail estimates put extended-warranty gross margins at 50%–60%, not buyer savings.

Why consider it?

The research cites industry estimates from the US retail market; these are historical seller margins, not current prices or a measured consumer saving. Assess the contract's actual cover and exclusions. Existing legal and manufacturer warranties differ by location, so the book's Chinese warranty rules are omitted.

Read the sources

Source grade B is reproduced from the original work. It does not establish suitability for everyone.

Original item: chapter 5, item 11 ↗

Adaptation: Rewritten in English from the locked Chinese original; retained evidence grade and study limits. Effect sizes quoted from the cited source: no quantified effect of the proposed action is claimed; numbers, where present, are descriptive findings, study procedures or guidance parameters. China-specific statistics, legal rules and procedures omitted.

Make space for a practical habit.
