Make the cue part of the plan

A specific cue makes a vague intention easier to start. Choose a goal you actually want, rather than using a better plan to force yourself into a goal you do not value.

AN ACTION TO CONSIDER

Write a goal as an if-then plan that says when and where you will act.

If-then planning improved goal attainment by a standardized effect of d = 0.65 in a meta-analysis.

Why consider it?

The meta-analysis combined tests of implementation intentions against comparison conditions. The standardized effect is not a percentage success rate or hours saved. Many studies involved students and health-related habits, so the same effect is not established for every work task or unwanted goal.
